BreatheWear CPAP Mask Chin Strap

The BreatheWear Halo chin strap keeps the mouth closed when you are using a nasal or pillow style mask for sleep apnea therapy. The CPAP pressure delivered from your therapy device can blow the mouth open, especially if you are on a high CPAP setting.

Halo Chin Strap is a reusable accessory worn by a sleep apnea patient to keep the mouth closed during sleep. The Halo® Chin Strap is a chin support of unique design for comfort and stability. The chin support itself is made of a breathable, flexible fabric with two adjustable Velcro® ends that feed through the one-piece halo that is worn over the crown of the head. The user may tighten/loosen the fit by adjusting the chin strap on either side of the head. The Halo® Chin Strap will accommodate a wide range of head sizes up to a maximum circumference of 26" from chin to crown of head. For a sleep apnea chin strap that offers more individual adjustability and fits a wider range of head sizes, please see our Cross Bar Chin Strap.

Air leaks severely reduce the effects of your prescribed CPAP therapy, causing you to wake up with a dry mouth, feeling tired, and needing more rest. Other options to consider for eliminating mouth breathing would be to try a full-face-style CPAP mask that covers the nose and the mouth. Waking with mouth dryness can be an indicator that your mouth is falling open during sleep.

Why Use a Chin Strap?

Are You a Mouth Breather? If you wake up with a dry mouth or throat, it may mean you are mouth breathing, and a chin strap can help keep your mouth shut.

High CPAP Pressures Cause Air Leakage: A partner may notice air escaping your mouth, or you might experience snoring. A chin strap helps maintain a proper seal by preventing this.

Mask Stability: It can help stabilize a CPAP mask or prevent you from taking it off while partially asleep.

How to Use a Chin Strap

The Right Fit: Ensure the strap is snug but not too tight. Overly tight straps can cause discomfort, breathing issues, jaw misalignment, or make TMJ symptoms worse.

Facial Hair Users: If you have a beard, you may need a larger size with a bigger chin cup and wider straps.

Ask Your Doctor: A doctor or sleep specialist can help determine if a chin strap is appropriate and can address any underlying issues, like nasal congestion that makes it hard to breathe through the nose.

Chin Strap Warnings

Must Be Used with CPAP: A chin strap is not a treatment for sleep apnea on its own. It must be used with a CPAP machine.

Possible Side Effects: Discomfort, jaw soreness, or skin irritation can occur. If the strap causes pain or breathing difficulties, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.
