Neoprene Chin Strap for CPAP Therapy

The neoprene chinstrap by Sunset Healthcare is designed to help the user who experiences their mouth opening while using a CPAP or Bi-Level machine. This typically occurs because of the machine providing the positive air pressure and the user not being used to the pressure being provided.

The chinstrap will fit from the chin to the crown of the head and can either fit over the CPAP mask headgear or inside of the headgear. Some users will put the chinstrap on first and then their CPAP mask so the headgear helps keep the chinstrap in place.

The chinstrap will typically not be used on going as the tendency to open the mouth should go away eventually after the user becomes more adjusted to the CPAP or Bi-Level pressure.

If used long term, wash weekly and replace every 3-6 months.

Why Use a Chin Strap?

Are You a Mouth Breather? If you wake up with a dry mouth or throat, it may mean you are mouth breathing, and a chin strap can help keep your mouth shut.

High CPAP Pressures Cause Air Leakage: A partner may notice air escaping your mouth, or you might experience snoring. A chin strap helps maintain a proper seal by preventing this.

Mask Stability: It can help stabilize a CPAP mask or prevent you from taking it off while partially asleep.

How to Use a Chin Strap

The Right Fit: Ensure the strap is snug but not too tight. Overly tight straps can cause discomfort, breathing issues, jaw misalignment, or make TMJ symptoms worse.

Facial Hair Users: If you have a beard, you may need a larger size with a bigger chin cup and wider straps.

Ask Your Doctor: A doctor or sleep specialist can help determine if a chin strap is appropriate and can address any underlying issues, like nasal congestion that makes it hard to breathe through the nose.

Chin Strap Warnings

Must Be Used with CPAP: A chin strap is not a treatment for sleep apnea on its own. It must be used with a CPAP machine.

Possible Side Effects: Discomfort, jaw soreness, or skin irritation can occur. If the strap causes pain or breathing difficulties, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.
