S9 VPAP™ Adapt is an adaptive servo-ventilator with a backup rate specifically designed to treat central sleep apnea (CSA) in all forms, including mixed sleep apnea, complex sleep apnea (CompSA) and periodic breathing such as Cheyne–Stokes respiration.

How Does The Adapt Work?

The S9 VPAP Adapt targets minute ventilation for optimal therapy and outcomes. ResMed's unique ASV algorithm monitors and learns the users recent minute ventilation (tidal volume × breathing rate) and sets a target at 90% of recent minute ventilation. The Pressure Support and backup rate then continually adjust to reflect the user's changing needs, reliably and steadily keeping users on target all through the night. In ASV Auto mode, the EPAP also responds to flow limitation, snore and obstructive apneas on the next breath, in proportion to the severity of the event.

Patient Comfort

Advanced, predictive technology maximizes comfort and synchrony over a wide range of breath rates—The ASV algorithm continuously learns the user's own respiratory rate through high-resolution breath phase mapping, maintaining an accurate backup rate even at lower breath rates. The algorithm maintains synchrony with the user's respiratory pattern by learning and predicting the inspiratory and expiratory durations as well as flow along 13 identifiable breath features. Additionally, the ResMed leak management feature ensures greater synchrony by offsetting variations and inconsistency due to leak.

Easy-Breathe for the most natural breathing comfort—Unique to ResMed, the patented Easy-Breathe waveform delivers a smoother, more comfortable breathing experience by replicating the natural wave shape of normal breathing.

S9 VPAP Adapt Care

Market-leading simplicity—Empirically selected default parameters are designed to cover the broadest range of patient setups. Unlike competitive devices that require setting extra parameters such as Rise Time, the VPAP Adapt reduces the need for elaborate customization during setup.

VPAP Adapt users choose the way in which they fall asleep; the Ramp functionality helps you fall asleep easily by making it more comfortable to breathe as you transition from awake to sleep state.

User-friendly interface; the intuitive treatment screen displays the patient's inspiratory and expiratory pressures in an easy-to-read bar graph, in addition to other patient data such as target minute volume and minute volume at every breath.

VPAP Adapt indications for use

The VPAP Adapt is indicated for the treatment of patients weighing more than 66 lb (30 kg) with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central and/or mixed apneas, or periodic breathing. The VPAP Adapt is intended for home and hospital use.

VPAP Adapt contraindications

Positive airway pressure therapy may be contraindicated in some patients with the following preexisting conditions:

  • severe bullous lung disease
  • pneumothorax or pneumomediastinum
  • pathologically low blood pressure, particularly if associated with intravascular volume depletion
  • dehydration
  • cerebrospinal fluid leak, recent cranial surgery, or trauma.
VPAP Adapt adverse effects

Patients should report unusual chest pain, severe headache, or increased breathlessness to their prescribing physician. An acute upper respiratory tract infection may require temporary discontinuation of treatment.

The following side effects may arise during the course of therapy with the device:

  • drying of the nose, mouth, or throat
  • nosebleed
  • bloating
  • ear or sinus discomfort
  • eye irritation
  • skin rashes
